Fall brings cooler temperatures and a host of new activities, making it crucial to stay vigilant and proactive about your well- being. Heidi Geib, RPh, owner of Heidi’s Pharmacy, shares tips on staying healthy and active during the fall.
1.) FLU AND COLD SEASON: STAY AHEAD OF THE GAME
As the weather cools, flu and cold season heats up. To safeguard yourself and loved ones, getting a flu vaccine is a top priority. Everyone—children, adults, the elderly, and pregnant women—can benefit from the flu shot. Bolster your defenses by prioritizing sleep, maintaining a regular exercise routine, and enjoying a diet rich in fruits and vegetables to keep your immune system in peak condition.
Heidi’s pharmacy offers convenient walk-in vaccine services Monday through Friday, and they are also mobile, providing vaccinations at nursing homes, schools, and other locations.
2.) WASH YOUR HANDS: THE POWER OF CLEAN
When it comes to preventing illness, handwashing is your first line of defense. Simple but effective, washing your hands can reduce the risk of respiratory infections by up to 21%. Make sure to scrub with soap and water for at least 20 seconds and rinse thoroughly. This small habit can make a big difference in keeping seasonal bugs at bay.
3.) YARD WORK SAFETY: PROTECT YOURSELF WHILE YOU WORK
Fall yard work can be enjoyable, but safety should always come first. Equip yourself with protective gloves, glasses, supportive shoes, and sturdy clothing. When raking leaves, use a “scissor” stance—right foot forward and left foot back, then switch sides to avoid back strain. Bend with your knees, not your waist, and make smaller piles to prevent overexertion.
