As an integrative pain physician, I approach pain from the traditional medical standpoint and a complementary medicine standpoint ensuring your health environment inside and out is optimal for healing. Following the traditional medical model, I will obtain a history and perform a physical exam. Instead of spending only a few minutes with you, my office visits are fairly lengthy; the initial two consult visits total up to three hours. This time is important to understand your goals in seeing me. After the first telehealth visit, I’ll send you a summary of our discussion that we’ll review at the subsequent in-office consult before proceeding with developing a treatment plan. I will use ultrasound to evaluate your area of pain and will assess the surrounding soft tissues to ensure your biomechanics are working properly. Often, the area of pain may be secondary to the actual cause of the pain—your hip may hurt due to a muscle strain, but the muscle strain is actually caused by inactivity of another muscle or a muscle imbalance in your back. I look at those kinetic chains to ensure adequate muscle function and looking at the fascia that can be scarred restricting motion.
From the complementary medicine standpoint, we approach chronic pain from a lifestyle medicine standpoint addressing stress management nutrition, sleep, and physical activity. Anxiety and stress are contributors to chronic pain, so our medical office is designed to be calming. We are located inside a century home where the walls have soothing colors. You’ll enjoy calming music, aromatherapy, and music of your choice. As one patient said, “The entire staff is very professional. Dr. Delzell allows plenty of time for questions and answers. I am a private person and I very much appreciate the fact that she understands this. She made the room calming with aromatherapy and music. She let me know what to expect throughout treatment. I can’t say enough about the quality of care she provided.” We work to help you create and maintain a state of inner harmony, moving away from illness and disease and focusing on holistic wellness to put pain in the past.
