The day-in, day-out work of running a home can be overwhelming. Add to that the extra demands of summer “break” and it’s a lot. Here are a few suggestions to keep your house running smoothly this summer!
1. FLOORS. When in doubt, sweep or better yet vacuum. Summer means lots of in and out of the house for you, your kids, and your pets! I can handle a certain amount of disarray, but when I’m starting to feel twitchy, I know it’s time to break out a broom or vacuum and attack the floors.
2. PUT AWAY THE EXTRAS. All you want to do when you get home from vacation, the pool, the beach or that baseball game is relax, but take a few minutes and have everyone pitch in and put everything away, the correct way. Gather all the dirty clothes and take them to the laundry room; put away all the clean clothes and toiletries and return the suitcases to storage.
It feels like this is going to take forever and that it might kill you, I know, but doing it will make you feel great!
3. TAKE A BREAK and call PETALSWEET CLEANING. If you have infants or small children, I don’t recommend taking on large cleaning and decluttering projects in the summer; the exception being if you are on an absolute vision quest like I was three years ago.
A poem I have seen comes to mind (author unknown):
Cleaning and scrubbing can wait for tomorrow, For babies grow up we’ve learned to our sorrow, So go to bed cobwebs and dust go to sleep. I’m rocking my babies cause babies don’t keep. Family First!
You can have it all. This is true whether or not you have children. Take the path less traveled, go for that hike, play basketball in the driveway with the kids, go to the movies, slowly make new habits, and enjoy the long and beautiful days of summer.
