NOWSA believes strong women build strong communities and we use sports as the means to drive this initiative. We are encouraging community members to donate to NOWSA as we drive safe and healthy spaces for women seeking to incorporate sports into their lives across greater Cleveland, Akron, and Youngstown. Our “Get in the Game” End of the Year Fundraiser is open now until December 31, 2022 to help foster safe and accessible sports environments for adults in the community.
The Northeast Ohio Women’s Sports Alliance began in June 2018 as a round-table discussion with five local women’s sports teams: Burning River Roller Derby, Cleveland Comets Softball, Cleveland Crush Basketball, Cleveland Fusion Football, and Cleveland Iron Maidens Rugby. We talked through our challenges and how we might learn from and support each other. Our conver- sation expanded to monthly meetings, under the name “Cleveland Women’s Sports” where we identified ways our teams could work together to minimize financial, logistical, and organizational chal- lenges.
NOWSA is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that centralizes support and promotion of community-based adult women’s sports, connect- ing athletic organizations, the community, and the resources they need.
We are currently 100% volunteer-run, and financial contributions enable us to become a long-standing and sustainable resource for organizations and individuals in the sports world.
NOWSA’s mission is to expand awareness for community-based sports in Northeast Ohio and offer supportive services for individual athletes, teams, their coaches and staff.
NOWSA was founded on the belief that women are stronger to- gether and develop important life skills and relationships through sport. Athletic participation should not have to end after high school or college graduation, so whether you want to be an athlete, coach, or volunteer, NOWSA strives to empower adult women to pursue the route of their choosing and minimize their barriers to entry.
