Although summer often brings a more relaxed atmosphere, it doesn’t necessarily mean we can slow down completely. Fortunately, we live in a region where the summer is much anticipated, and people are ready to jump in the pool, fire up the grill and take advantage of the sunshine and warm weather. Here are some suggestions for ways to savor and make the most of each day during the summer:
1. START YOUR DAY OUTDOORS. Wake up early to catch the sunrise or enjoy breakfast in your garden, on your porch, or even a front step will do. Connecting with nature right from the start can set a positive tone for the day. If you’re lucky, you might hear birds chirping.
2. EMBRACE SEASONAL ACTIVITIES. Take advantage of the longer days and warmer weather by planning outdoor activities like picnics, hiking, swimming, or even just a leisurely stroll. Try something new like paddleboarding, pickleball or kayaking. Northeast Ohio is filled with summertime activities for all ages. Cleveland’s Metroparks include something for everyone, including 325 miles of trails, nine scenic golf courses, eight lakefront parks and a nationally acclaimed zoo. Check out their programs at www.clevelandmetroparks.com
3. PRACTICE MINDFULNESS. Take time to appreciate the small things in your day, whether it’s sipping a cold drink, feeling the warmth of the sun on your skin, or listening to the sounds of nature around you. Shut off your phone and just listen to the sounds around you. There are 86,400 seconds in a day. Mindfulness can help you stay present and fully experience each moment.
4. PLAN TO CONNECT. Summer is a perfect time for BBQs, picnics, or outdoor gatherings with friends and family. The warm weather is much anticipated in Ohio and is a great time to get outdoors.
5. STAY ACTIVE. Incorporate physical activity into your routine, whether it’s swimming, biking, yoga, or simply going for a walk. Sitting at a computer all day can wreak havoc on your body. Exercise can boost your mood and energy levels, helping you make the most of each day. Getting out and moving (even when I don’t feel like it) has been one of the best ways for me to keep my body and mind active.
6. EXPERIMENT WITH SEASONAL FOODS.
Explore farmer’s markets and try new recipes using fresh, seasonal ingredients. Many of the markets host cooking demonstrations and you can talk to the people who grow food for our families to enjoy. I also love getting cooking suggestions from other shoppers especially for fruits or veggies I may not be familiar with. And, whether it’s making homemade ice cream, grilling veggies, or mixing up refreshing cocktails, savoring the flavors of summer can be a delightful experience. Check out www.ohioproud.org to locate a farmers’ market near you. Check the hours before you go!
7. TAKE TIME FOR SELF-CARE. Make time for yourself to relax and recharge. You can’t refill from an empty cup. Whether it’s reading a book in a hammock (the public libraries have great ideas for summer reading), practicing yoga, listening to music or indulging in a soothing skincare routine, self-care can help you feel rejuvenated and ready to seize the day.
Ultimately, the key to savoring each day of summer is to be present, embrace the season, and find joy in the simple pleasures that summer brings. Whether you’re exploring new activities, spending time with loved ones, or simply taking in the beauty of nature, make the most of this vibrant season.
