When we think about stressors we tend to think of stress as an emotion, a state of existence, an external source that was inflicted into our life… or is it?
What exactly is stress?
Stress is a natural occurrence in life and it can show up in your bodies’ automatic responses and reactions to challenges or situations. It is our perceptions and responses to stress that ultimately effects, shapes and tells the story of how we developed into the person we are today.
Q: How to manage our responses to everyday stressors life presents?
A: Stress offers the body an opportunity to manage its responses to circumstances that can activate the brain into perceiving unsafe situations. It is true, our brain will tell us when we feel safe or unsafe. That same brain will also cue in the body to respond to stressors based off of previous experiences.
What if stress was understood on a level through explaining: “the brain and the body are making their best attempt to recalibrate the nervous system.”
In other words, during stressful times, the body in conjunction with the brain is communicating to you “it’s time to make a visit to the tools in your tool box for coping and achieving a healthier lifestyle.”
Q: Is Psychotherapy a useful space to explore and integrate healthier ways to cope with stress?
A: Psychotherapy is one way of acquiring the needed tools to coping with the everyday stressors or the long- term effects of stress. Working with a skilled clinician can offer new insight and awareness to reducing the negative impacts of stress. Of course, reading, listening to podcasts, practicing mindfulness, journaling, meditation and a host of multiple modalities can be a great source to changing our relationship to stress.
