Child abuse is a community problem, requiring a community solution. This April you will see more than eighty (80) Pinwheel Gardens displayed across Medina County to raise awareness for Child Abuse Prevention Month. The main garden at the Medina Public Library will be planted during the Community Pinwheel Walk on April 16th with one pinwheel representing each of the 595 investigated cases of child abuse or neglect in Medina County during 2022.
Pinwheels symbolize the carefree, joyful childhoods that we want for all children. Protecting children from harm helps ensure they have the opportunity to reach their full potential and lead healthy, fulfilling lives. Children who experience abuse or neglect have a higher risk of experiencing challenges related to mental health and substance use, along with other difficulties, because of these traumatic experiences.
Parents, caregivers, and community members play a crucial role in preventing child abuse by building positive relationships with children and families. Safe, stable, nurturing relationships are among the most powerful, protective, and healing forces in a child’s life. When children feel loved and supported, they are less likely to be victimized, and are more likely to seek help when they need it.
Everyone can play a role in creating safe environments for children. By creating a culture of safety and accountability, we can work together to prevent child abuse. By prioritizing prevention, building supportive relationships, and fostering safe and nurturing communities, we can create a world where every child is safe, loved, and protected.
If you suspect a child is being abused or neglected in Medina County, please call the Child Abuse Hotline at 330.661.0800 or 911 if the child is in immediate danger.
